The National Business Council (Conep) says that death threats and harassment against journalists are “unacceptable.” Four prominent Dominican journalists recently reported that they had received death threats due to their position on the Haitian immigration issue. During a demonstration in Santiago threatening statements were issued against Juan Bolivar Diaz, Huchy Lora, Amelia Deschamps and Roberto Cavada.
Conep stated that the “motivation of these threats to the physical safety of these distinguished journalists is the legitimate exercise of their right to free expression and the fusion of their ideas on issues of national interest, which is unacceptable in the context of a democratic society.”
