While 5.6 million citizens have now renewed their ID cards, around 1.7 million Dominicans have yet to do so. The Central Electoral Board (JCE) has announced a special plan to reach out to the rest of the population. JCE president Roberto Rosario said that the JCE has data on the areas with the greatest concentration of citizens who have still not renewed their cedulas. The goal is to provide the entire population with the document by May 2015 at the latest, says Rosario.
“In the next few days, we are going to develop a strategy for approaching the citizens who still do not have it. For this we are seeking to obtain the support and the agreement of the political parties,” said Rosario. He added that this plan would also benefit identification document renewal and the census of Dominicans overseas.
