According to the Herrera and Santo Domingo Province Industries Association (AEIH), the country cannot afford the burden of such a costly political party system without regulation. Antonio Taveras Guzman called for a bill to be approved that would make the political parties accountable for the funds they receive from the National Budget.
In a press release, the business group said the political parties bill should include elements that strengthen democracy and create solid, transparent and functional political parties.
“The political parties need to understand that they are the pillars of the democratic system and need to respond to a society that demands transparency and clear rules on how they operate, both internally as well as externally,” said the organization.
Taveras Guzman said that corporate responsibility does not end at the company’s door. “We need a country that runs on solid and transparent institutions. We need a strong political party system and a responsible political leadership that is committed to the ethical exercise of politics and the structural reforms that the country needs in order to strengthen our competitive capacities,” said the Taveras in the release.
Civic society and business groups have objected to the political party bill being custom-made to the interests of the ruling party, which also holds the Congressional majority.
