Fertility treatment received by a woman who is already the mother of a 10-year old boy was too successful. 32-year old Aracelys Guzman Martinez from the community of La Victoria gave birth to sextuplets at the Dr. Reynaldo Almanzar Maternity Hospital in Villa Mella yesterday, Sunday, 8 February 2015. She gave birth by C-section but “without complications” between 10am and 12:30pm. She was 34 weeks pregnant.
Three baby girls and three baby boys were born weighing between 3.5 and 2.2 lbs. The babies are in the intensive care unit. The boys have been named Jefferson, Jeison and Anderson Yunior and the girls are Ashley Margarita, Aleisha Vanesa and Sarai Trinidad.
The mother first visited the hospital in November when she was 24 weeks pregnant.
She told journalists that although she is married, her husband could not afford to support the six new babies. She has asked the government for an apartment in which to raise her family.
In October 2013 another couple at the same hospital had quintuplets, but two died before leaving the hospital.
