Police chief calls for disarmament

National Police chief Major General Manuel Castro Castillo is calling for a reduction in gun ownership among the general public. He says that firearms are behind 63.2% of the country’s violent deaths.

Speaking yesterday, Tuesday 10 February 2015, Castro Castillo said that he wanted a total ban on civilians holding firearms in urban areas and asked for a change in the law so that anyone with prior convictions who is arrested for carrying firearms should not be granted bail.

He added that he also planned to change the firearms policy within the police to ensure that members of the force who work in administrative, medical and musical roles are no longer allowed to carry weapons, and only police agents working on the streets will be allowed to have guns.
