President Danilo Medina has designated Ecuador Open champion Victor Estrella as Goodwill Ambassador for the Dominican Republic. Estrella met with President Medina at the Presidential Palace to receive the honor on Wednesday, 11 February 2015.
Estrella is now ranked 52nd by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). He is the only Dominican player ever to be ranked in the top 100 of the ATP.
Estrella said, “It’s an incredible recognition and a great honor to be named Goodwill Ambassador of my country”.
He presented the President with the tennis racquet he used to win his first ATP World Tour title in Quito, Ecuador on Sunday, 8 February 2015. The 34-year old became the oldest first-time ATP World Tour titlist after defeating top seed Feliciano Lopez in Quito last week.
Dominican Republic Olympic Committee president Luisin Mejia, Banco de Reservas administrator Enrique Ramirez Paniagua, Dominican Tennis Federation president Persio Maldonado, and Estrella’s agent Luis Jose Bonilla also attended the event.
Estrella made it into the top 100s of the ATP ranking for the first time on 10 June 2014, at the age of 33.
