A notorious drug dealer, Kelvin Hernandez Flaquer, alias Coto, has been arrested in a joint operation by the Public Prosecution Service in La Romana and the National Police in order to rescue a Spanish-Dominican national, Antonio Juan Farias. Hernandez Flaquer is said to belong to the network that used to be run by convicted Puerto Rican drug dealer Jose David Figueroa Agosto. The authorities are on the trail of several people who under the leadership of fugitive Jesus Pascual Cabrera Ruiz are suspected to have filled in for Antonio del Rosario Puente (Tono Lena) and Jose David Figueroa Agosto, convicted abroad for drug dealing.
Another six people were arrested at the same time, and Public Prosecutors are seeking pre-trial custody at a hearing to be held on Friday 20 February.
The other six are Jose Esteban Medina Ubiera (Oreja), Henry William Castillo Paulino (Tulile), Ricardeau Barjon (Dodo), Lenin Aneudis Morales Santana (Joselo), Carlos Manuel Cordero Ozuna (El Flaco) and Jose Ramon Berroa Carrasco (Gurimbo).
The police also found a jeep belonging to Farias’ wife, US$30,300 in cash, four pistols, four cell phones, 17 rolls of adhesive tape, five passports and other evidence.
Police believe that Juan Antonio Farias was kidnapped from his home in Rivera de Cumayasa on 11 February 2015, and that he was tortured and threatened with a firearm to hand over all the money in his home, before being taken by his captors to Villa Vivero, from where he was rescued by authorities.
