Thieves who stole from Haitian Ambassador arrested

The National Police have announced the arrests of seven people in connection with a robbery of safe boxes from the house of the Haitian Ambassador, Fritz Cineas on 5 February 2015.

Police corporals Yeferi Joel Rosa Gomez and Silfredo Encarnacion Rosa were arrested. Police say they patrolled in the Simon Bolivar area of the capital when not robbing houses. Luis Manuel Polonia from the Dominican Navy as well as civilians Leuris Ogando Otano and Ronaldo Leandro Moreno were also detained in connection with the crime. The Police also arrested Luis Esmeraldo Abreu Santiago and Junior Samuel Feliz (Junito), who they suspect were the organizers of the robbery of the safe boxes.

According to Police chief Major General Manuel Castro Castillo, Abreu Santiago was hired to fumigate the ambassador’s home twice a month. As reported, he showed the others where the safes were kept and planned the robbery with Junito.

One of the safes was broken open in the house of Ogando Otano, in Villa Mella, and after emptying it, it was thrown into the Isabela River.

Apparently one of the safes contained US$180,000 that has not been recovered, and neither have all of the ambassador’s documents that were reported missing.

The Police concluded that neither the maid nor security guard had anything to do with the robbery.
