UNICEF says poverty decreases in the DR

According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) representative in the country, Maria Jesus Conde, the Dominican state invested RD$90 billion in children, from infancy up to the age of 18 from 2010 to 2013. Nonetheless, Conde is still calling for an improvement in spending on education.

She made the comments while presenting the results of two studies, “Public Investment in Children in the Dominican Republic,” and “General Poverty Map of the DR” yesterday, Monday 16 February 2015.

Conde highlighted that during the period the government’s biggest investment had been in education and health and said that poverty had decreased from 41.7% in 2013 to 38.1% in 2014.

The studies were presented at the Presidential Palace to mark the ninth anniversary of the creation of the Ministry of Economy and Planning in 2006. Minister Temistocles Montas said that the Ministry had met the objectives that were established when it was set up and that more robust and mature tools were now in place for planning for the future.
