Former Senate president Reinaldo Pared Perez (PLD-National District) gave a radio speech yesterday, Tuesday 17 February 2015 announcing his aspirations to be chosen the PLD presidential candidate in the May 2016 elections. He portrayed himself as the best candidate who for continuing the work of the Medina government. The 2010 Constitution bans President Danilo Medina from running for President.
In his speech he promised to reduce unemployment from the current rate of 14% to 8% with an emphasis on creating jobs for young people, promoting farming, agro-tourism, ecotourism and creative services.
“I believe that jobs are the main tool for social development,” he said. “But here well, it is not about government jobs, but about productive jobs generated by small, medium and large companies that pay fair wages, are competitive and create more benefits for all,” he said in his first campaign speech.
Pared Perez is considered one of President Danilo Medina’s strongest allies in Congress.
However, according to the 24-27 January 2015 Gallup-Hoy poll, under 1% of voters expressed support for him.
