After more than two hours of demonstrations yesterday, Tuesday 17 February 2015, students at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) started returning to their normal routine. However, classes at the state university were cancelled today, Wednesday 18 February 2015.
The students said the protests were about online enrollment problems at the Humanities Faculty, bad food service in the canteen and in support of a campaign against the new charges being imposed on medical students.
Two of the students said that as far as the Humanities Faculty was concerned neither students nor lecturers knew where or when the classes would take place and that the students had been unable to register for classes due to system problems. They said that only food being served in the canteen was dried herring and spaghetti.
The rector of the state university (UASD) Ivan Grullon challenged the masked protestors. In response to a question by the Enfoque Matinal NCDN (Channel 37) TV program, Grullon said, “I’m warning that I’m not going to tolerate chaos at the UASD. I have enough experience. I know the university and us. If they want war, they are going to have it, but [I am] not going to step back,” he said.
According to Grullon, the suspected agitators were being located. He pointed out that they did not appear to belong to any organized university groups.
