Warning not to deport Haitians

William Charpentier, coordinator of the National Board for Immigrants and Refugees (Menamird) is warning the government that it cannot deport any Haitian national once the National Regularization Plan comes to its conclusion on 15 June 2015. He said that the Dominican state has to comply with established protocol or they will be violating the human rights of thousands of people who have been in the country for more than 40 years.

The Haitian rights campaigner asked the government to be careful with the deportation process after 15 June and hoped that Congress would extend the time limit, as many Haitians have been unable to get the documentation they needed. He stressed that this lack of documentation was one of the factors that had prevented the Plan from proceeding as quickly as it should have.

In an interview with journalist Gilbert Guzman on the “Reporte” program on Channel 24 yesterday, Tuesday 17 February 2015, Charpentier stated that while the country did have the right to deport anyone who is not here legally, there was a way of doing this in such a way that respects human rights. He stressed that every person without documentation was still a human being.
