The Dominican Conference of Bishops (CED) says that economists and the great promoters of our economic policies should think and promote an economic dynamic that improves people’s welfare, so that the state can invest in the basic elements for a good quality of life. The Dominican bishops made their call in a message issued in the lead-up to the Independence Day celebrations on the 27th of February, with the title “So that justice and peace can be found.” The CED listed public health, education, good housing for poor people, public safety, the justice system, the construction of rural roads that link rural communities, lighting on streets, avenues and highways as well as the maintenance of key public works, as the elements in which investment must be made in order to guarantee a good quality of life for the population.
The bishops also proposed that employment should continue to be the main way of improving quality of life, especially among women and young people, combined with promoting fair salaries to enable them to cover the cost of the basic family basket and access to the services that provide a real quality of life. They suggested the need to create a labor policy that follows the principles of universal justice, which should be constructed “on the basis of protecting the working population, assuring compliance with the rights established in the Constitution, in the Labor Code and in the Social Security Law, among others.” They also expressed their opinions on issues of public safety, abortion, impunity, and the Electricity Pact.
