The leadership of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) says it does not have any records showing how taxpayer money was used to fund the political party’s activities from 2009 to 2012. The JCE delivered RD$1.21bn in funds to the party during that period.
The party leadership says that the documents went missing during the clash with dissidents loyal to former President Hipolito Mejia on 27 January 2013.
The Chamber of Accounts has reported that it was not able to audit the political party because of the missing documents. It has referred the case to the Central Electoral Board (JCE) ethics commission.
Party president Miguel Vargas Maldonado is accusing the dissident groups loyal to Hipolito Mejia of responsibility for the missing documents.
The dissident group has since left the party and founded the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).
