The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that this year’s tomato harvest will be around 4.6 million tons of tomatoes. The Ministry has been supporting many farmers who have invested RD$500 million to plant 60,000 tareas (3,773 hectares).
Minister Angel Estevez says that there will be a record harvest this year.
Meanwhile, Afconagro president Felix Garcia said that Dominican tomato growers would be helping their Haitian counterparts plant tomatoes for industrial processing. The tomatoes will be planted in Haiti and processed in the Afconagro plant in Azua in the Dominican Republic. A pilot program is underway for the planting of 1,000 tareas (63 hectares) in the municipality of Croix-des-Bouquets, near Port-au-Prince.
