Banking now open to illegal immigrants in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is sending another sign that immigration is welcome. The Senate has approved the Law of Financial Access for All that gives everyone in Puerto Rico access to banking accounts regardless of their migratory status. The bill had already passed in the lower chamber. All the governor has to do now is to sign it into law. The bill complements Law 97-2013 that authorized the issue of drivers’ licenses regardless of migratory status.

Legislator Jose Nadal Power, one of the authors of the bill, highlighted that it is an example of the current public policy that recognizes equity and facilitates the integration of immigrant communities to the broad concept of citizenship of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

According to Nadal Power, it is a measure that recognizes the rights of people who are non-citizens to live and progress on the island.

The bill seeks to reduce financial informality and to prevent loan sharks from taking advantage of immigrants.

Dominicans make up the largest group of immigrants to Puerto Rico.
