The National Business Council (Conep) is calling on the government to take action to organize the transport system so that the law is respected and competitiveness and free markets are allowed to operate.
In a statement, Conep called for an end to what it called the gross abuses of dominant positions exercised by transporters affecting passengers and cargo owners, while the government looks the other way.
The leading business organization called for the start of a real and comprehensive reform of the transport sector. It pointed to the continued vandalism in the sector that affects both cargo and passenger transport. Conep highlights that a transport system should serve as a basis for development and competitiveness.
“The Dominican Republic receives millions of tourists, has a significant export volume and above all has the potential to become a regional logistics center, but it is impossible for it to modernize when it has an expensive and outdated system of informal transporters that does not abide by free market rules and free competition, and does not take on responsibility towards society “.
Conep says that “darkness” covers the transport sector given the profiteering transport companies that hide under the guise of unions and that are breeding grounds for malicious acts against the state, public security and social stability.
