In his traditional state-of-the-nation address on Independence Day, Friday, 27 February 2015, President Danilo Medina summarized government achievements in 2014, insisting that many campaign promises have already been met.
He said the task ahead for his government’s 18 remaining months was to consolidate what has been achieved and continue to promote great changes.
He spoke optimistically about the positive highlights of the Dominican economy, which is performing well above the regional average. He described the government efforts to improve quality of life for the poor through education, public health, housing and security.
He also urged more work for transparency, calling on government departments to comply.
He also confirmed that the facilities granted to foreigners for legalizing their status in the country under the National Foreign Legalization Plan would expire on 15 June 2015 and there will not be an extension.
He announced a new program to help elderly people by centralizing homes and hiring more caregivers.
He announced progress in Bahia de las Aguilas, saying that it would be developed in a plan coordinated by the ministries of Tourism and Environment. This is part of an increased focus of government investments in the southwest announced by the President on 27 February.
