The Tax Agency (DGII) says that as of 31 December 2014, 3,398,662 vehicles were authorized to circulate in the Dominican Republic. This includes 182,889 new vehicles. Of the total, 53.1% are motorcycles and 21.8% automobiles.
Most of the registered vehicles circulate in the National District or 27.3%, followed by adjacent province of Santo Domingo including Boca Chica, Santo Domingo East, Santo Domingo North, Santo Domingo West, Los Alcarrizos, Pedro Brand and San Antonio de Guerra with 16.1%. Next is the province of Santiago where 8.5% of the vehicles circulate.
The 2014 Vehicles Bulletin, a report published by the DGII states that there was an increase of 124,349 motorcycles in 2014, or 7.4% compared to 2013. In 2014, 24,496 new automobiles entered the system, or 3.4%. The number of SUVs increased by 6.6%, or 20,618 new units.
96.4% of the vehicles are from 2009 or earlier. The stats show that 0.4% of the vehicles are from 2015, 41.8% are from 2001-2013 and 56% are 2000 or older.
66.1% of the vehicles are registered to persons (77.8% are men), and 33.9% to companies.
Japanese brands make up 74.2% of all automobiles in circulation and 66.8% of the SUVs.
Grey is the preferred vehicle color in the Dominican Republic (18.5%), followed by white (18.1%) and blue (16.3%)
