Santo Domingo bypass does not meet expectations

The new highway connection from Haina Industrial Park and port to Duarte Highway has failed to meet expectations, a report in Diario Libre says today. The executive vice president of the Haina Association of Industries, Dircia Paulino, described it as “a disappointment.”

She said it has become a pain in the neck for industries, business owners and transporters in Haina and San Cristobal that need to cross the Sanchez Highway on the way to the Duarte Highway.

She said the Ministry of Public Works had changed the original plan without taking into account the consequences of these changes. “The original design we were presented with was perfect,” she said. She believes that the design was changed for budgetary reasons.

Paulino criticized the installation of traffic lights to distribute traffic in an area heavily used by oil tankers, freight trucks and buses. “The bypass has isolated us and the Sanchez Highway has been turned into a street because of the use of traffic lights,” she complained, pointing to major bottlenecks that have been created where before there were none.

Haina’s Mayor Marino Lora said that there is now traffic chaos at the entrance to Haina during peak hours and that traffic flow at that intersection was better in the past. He said the Ministry of Public Works has asked for a month to review the situation.
