The Coalition for Education with Dignity (CED) has thrown a bucket of cold water on the impressive figures published by the National Literacy Program Quisqueya Learns with You. The program to reduce illiteracy in the Dominican Republic was announced at the start of the Medina administration.
In his 27 February 2015 address to the nation, President Danilo Medina stated that 300,000 people had graduated from the program. The CED corrected the statistic and said that only 214,714 people had received certificates that they were now literate, or 27% of the 795,922 people who have been registered for the program. The Coalition pointed out that signing up for the program is not the same thing as completing it. The CED said, however, that the literacy program has successfully met 93.5% of its target of reaching out to 851,396 people in the Dominican Republic classified as illiterate.
