Pan Am Games medals to be made with Dominican silver

Kelvin Dushnisky, co-president of Barrick Gold Corporation in the Dominican Republic, has announced that the silver medals for the 2015 Toronto Pan American Games would be made from metals mined at the Barrick Gold Corporation mine in Pueblo Viejo, Sanchez Ramirez (Cotui) province. The gold will be sourced from the Barrick Hemlo mine in Ontario, Canada and the bronze medals will be made with copper from the Barrick mine in Zaldivar, Chile. Barrick will be the official metal supplier and provide the raw materials for the more than 4,000 medals to be awarded at the games that will be held in Toronto from 10-26 July 2015.

The medals will be designed and produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. For the first time they will include inscriptions in Braille.

Each medal will measure 86.7 mm in diameter and weigh 350 grams. The artwork was developed with the input of Christi Belcourt, a Metis visual artist. A total of 4,283 competition medals and 115,664 participation medals will be struck.

It is an honor for us to supply the materials for the medals for the best athletes of the Americas,” said Dushnisky.
