Senator Dionis Sanchez of the southwestern border province of Pedernales has criticized the recent statement by Haitian President Michel Martelly calling for Dominicans to stop violence against Haitians living in the Dominican Republic. Sanchez says that the Haitian authorities are being insincere when it comes to the commitments and agreements it has signed with the country.
Interviewed by Hector Herrera Cabral on the D’Agenda TV show on Channel 11, he said that any incident affecting Haitians in the DR is blown out of proportion. He criticized what he calls “the enormous bias of international organizations and non-governmental agencies and the governments against the true reality of relations between both countries.” “It would seem that the international organizations make a living from the conflict between Haiti and the Dominican Republic because they keep pumping up the crisis, accusing us of racism and xenophobia and inciting hate between both countries,” he said.
Sanchez says that people in the United States, France, Canada, the United States and Caricom are inciting hatred in the Dominican Republic-Haiti relationship and running what he described as “a perverse campaign” that accuses the country of being racist and xenophobic against Haiti. He criticized the Carter Center for focusing on portraying Haiti as a victim and the Dominican Republic as the victimizer instead of working to strengthen harmonious relations between both countries.
He stated that these organizations should be backing the National Foreigner Legalization Plan to resolve the problem of lack of legal status of resident Haitians instead of spending their time discrediting it abroad.
Sanchez says the government has made millions of dollars available to implement the free plan, which has never been done anywhere else in the world, including in Haiti where ID documents issued by the Haitian government are costly.
San Cristobal senator Tommy Galan also rejected Martelly’s call to the DR to stop supposed violence against Haitians in the country. Galan said that there is no other country where Haitians are treated better than in the DR. “I believe that President Martelly is misinformed about the reality of his country’s Diaspora in the Dominican Republic,” he said as reported in Listin Diario.
Meanwhile, deputy Vinicio Castillo Seman speculated that President Martelly’s statement suggests that the Haitian government itself may be behind the smear campaign against the Dominican Republic and inciting Haitians against the DR with the apparent aim of increasing the conflict between both countries. He said that the President of Haiti is facing the rejection of the Haitian people who are demanding the celebration of elections. “He want to unfold the flag of a supposed defense of Haitians in the DR to strengthen his position inside Haiti, while incriminating the country so that it cannot deport illegal Haitians,” he told Listin Diario.
Meanwhile, the Haitian government says it has strengthened security at Dominican consulates and embassy in Haiti. The Dominican government recalled most of its staff at the missions to Santo Domingo after protestors stormed the Dominican consulate in Port-au-Prince. During the attack, the Dominican flag was lowered and the Haitian flag was raised.
