If you pay your taxes, the odds are that you live in the National District, better known as the capital city of Santo Domingo. The Tax Agency (DGII) reports that a study of taxpayers by location up to 2013 showed that 63.65% are based in the National District, 13.73% in San Cristobal (and probably commute to Santo Domingo) and 7.98% in nearby province of Santo Domingo. The rest of the country accounts for only 13.73% of tax payments.
The DGII has its work cut out in pursuing people who do not pay taxes in the rest of the country.
The DGII says that direct taxes accounted for 46% of taxes, and indirect for 54%.
National District-based contributors paid 77.87% of the direct taxes and 51.61% of the indirect taxes.
