DR consulates in Haiti to reopen and talks to resume

Foreign Relations Minister Andres Navarro has announced in Antigua, Guatemala that the Dominican government will make preparations to open the five Dominican consulates in Haiti next week after receiving staff safety guarantees from President Michel Martelly of Haiti. During the meeting between Navarro and his Haitian counterpart Pierre Duly Brutus in Antigua, Guatemala, yesterday, Tuesday 10 March 2015 they also agreed to reopen the talks at the Bilateral Commission that is working on the bilateral agenda.

Navarro and Brutus met at the 20th Ordinary Meeting of the Council Of Ministers of the Association of Caribbean States (AEC) where they spoke about the tensions that led to the temporary closure of the Dominican missions. Brutus confirmed that Dominican consular staff would be protected by a reinforcement of police and Minustah (United Nations Stabilization Unit in Haiti) soldiers.

Navarro said that both countries wanted to live in peace and harmony and confirmed that the Bilateral Commission talks would resume to discuss matters like security, border management, immigration and trade.

He went on to say he would meet again with Brutus this Friday, 13 March 2015 in the southwestern border town of Jimani and that they have also invited the Minustah Head of Mission, Sandra Honore, to the meeting.
