Impasse over wage increase

Trade Union representatives are asking for a 30% wage increase across-the-board. The National Salaries Committee, which only has the authority to rule on minimum wages last ordered an increase of this kind two years ago.

Diario Libre’s editorial today, Wednesday 11 March 2015 asks whether it might be better to stabilize the cost of goods to ensure there is a real increase in wage purchasing power. Diario Libre says that what usually happens is that consumer prices go up as soon as a wage increase is announced, which cancels out any positive effect.

There is likewise the concern that a minimum wage increase will have a chiller effect on new jobs in the private sector, especially those created by small business.
