Massive drug haul in southwest

The National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) says that a cocaine shipment was seized from a speedboat being operated by four Colombians in international waters in a joint operation with the United States Coastguard and other Dominican agencies.

The Dominican Air Force with four Super Tucano planes and the Navy with speedboats also took part in the operation outside of Dominican territorial waters near Beata, an island off the coast of the southwestern province of Pedernales earlier this week. They confiscated 14 sacks with 350 packages of cocaine, which were taken to the United States along with the arrested Colombians.

DNCD spokesman Dario Medrano said that the operation marked the start of the agency’s new strategy of attacking drug dealing outside the country’s borders.

Medrano named the arrested men as Daniel Olaya de Luque, 42, Yamid Gutierrez Vanegas, 38, Erwin Jacey Benier Ipuana, 42, and Oscar Jimenez Hoyos, 57, none of whom had any documents on them.

Medrano said that they and the drugs were taken to DNCD headquarters and then on to the San Isidro Air Force base where they were handed over to US Drug Enforcement Administration officers who accompanied them to the United States.
