Supporters of former President Leonel Fernandez have invited PLD Central Committee members to a meeting today, Thursday 12 March 2015 with the party president, Fernandez himself. The meeting is scheduled for 11am at the former President’s political offices on Benito Moncion Street, near the corner of Bolivar Avenue, in the Gazcue sector of Santo Domingo. Yesterday, Wednesday 11 March 2015, a meeting with some 50 PLD deputies was held at this office. The deputies expressed their support for Fernandez and asked him to seek the PLD presidential nomination.
Domingo Jimenez, a Central Committee member and one of the coordinators of the meetings, said that “the president wants to have contact with the leadership and with the people, and this is the first in a long list of events aimed at taking the pulse of the situation.”
He reported that Fernandez would meet with party activists and chairs of intermediate committees in Santo Domingo North on Saturday, 14 March. Jimenez added that on Sunday 15 March, the PLD President is holding another meeting with the party leadership in San Pedro de Macoris.
The moves come at a time when supporters of President Danilo Medina’s re-election have revved up efforts to move on the constitutional reform required in order for him to seek re-election in 2016. Polls show President Medina topping the list of politicians in terms of popularity, but the same polls show that Fernandez is likely to win the 2016 presidential election if he runs.
Yesterday, Wednesday 11 March 2015, Minister of Public Works Gonzalo Castillo said that President Danilo Medina’s re-election is “in the heart of most Dominicans.”
