Angel Segura, director of mobile transport for the National District (Santo Domingo) city council is recommending the introduction of bus routes to transport students to the 99 city center schools. He said this would save every parent from having to take their children to school in a single vehicle. Segura says that no matter how many tunnels or under and overpasses are built, any definite solution to the city’s traffic problems will be impossible without an efficient public transport system. He said that the bottlenecks in the center of the city result from the growth in the number of cars while the trend everywhere else in the world is towards public transport.
During school vacations there is a marked reduction in traffic congestion.
