Navarro and Brutus to meet in Jimani

The foreign ministers of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, Pierre Duly Brutus and Andres Navarro are meeting at 10:30am today, Friday 13 March 2015 in the border town of Jimani in the south western Dominican Republic. They will discuss the reopening of the five Dominican consulates in Haiti that were shut down for security reasons after the storming of the Dominican consulate in Port-au-Prince by protestors who raised the Haitian flag after taking down and burning the Dominican flag. This followed another incident in which security was compromised at the consulate in the southern border town of Anse-a-Pitre.

The meeting marks the resumption of bilateral talks on development and cooperation. The meeting was set after the foreign ministers met at the 20th Ordinary Meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Association of Caribbean States in Antigua, Guatemala earlier this week.

It was agreed then that the consulates in Ouanaminthe, Port-au-Prince, Anse-a-Pitre, Cap-Haitien and Belladere would reopen after President Michel Martelly guaranteed safety at the missions with reinforced security forces, including Minustah (UN peacekeeping force) soldiers.

The next meeting of the Mixed Bilateral Commission was announced for Friday, 20 March 2015.
