First Lady Candida Montilla formally opened the Women’s Sports Festival at the Volleyball Pavilion in the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center yesterday, Thursday 12 March 2015. Montilla was accompanied by Sports Minister Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal and Senate president Cristina Lizardo, who also chairs the Games Organizing Committee. A total of 1,400 athletes from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Panama, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic are competing in the weekend event. There will be competitions in 20 sports: chess, track and field, basketball, handball, boxing, fencing, Frisbee, football, hockey on grass, judo, karate, wrestling, mountain biking, racquetball, softball, taekwondo, tennis, archery and volleyball.
