Aspiring presidential candidate for the PRM, Luis Abinader has spoken in favor of unifying the opposition in order to defeat the PLD in the 2016 presidential election. “I agree on uniting all the opposition,” he said. “We have to go into government to make changes, and unity has to happen not only to win the elections, but to make the real changes in the country. ”
Abinader described corruption and impunity as an embarrassment to Dominican society that threaten family values and need to be firmly attacked and punished responsibly. Citizens who work and pay taxes suffer helplessly seeing how the PLD governments turn the public treasury into a bounty to be distributed unreasonably, he stated in his call for change.
He said once the primaries of the PRM take place, he would focus on uniting all the forces that want change.
The PRM broke away from the PRD in opposition to supporters of party president Miguel Vargas, to be the PRD presidential candidate in 2016 presidential elections. Polls show Vargas as one of the lowest ranked in popularity.
The most recent Gallup poll showed that former President Leonel Fernandez would win the election in a second round. Nevertheless, political analysts say there could be a surprise if the opposition could unite against the return of Fernandez to the Presidency.
