Casa de Campo gets its first big park

Casa de Campo in La Romana may be leading the way again with this spring’s opening of a 26.3-hectare (65-acre) park in the northeastern section of the resort. The park is separated by the connecting street between the new Vista Lago development and Los Flamboyanes residential areas, as reported in Costasur/Casa de Campo News. The soon-to-be-opened park follows a recent trend for real estate developers to build parks instead of the higher-to-maintain golf course greenery.

According to Costasur Planning director Adolfo Despradel, this is a new outdoor recreational space for Casa de Campo residents – a place for families to enjoy with their children and strollers, play with their Frisbees or have a yoga session. The project has been divided into three stages to be completed by late fall 2015.

The park includes two loops, one 2.5 km circuit covering the entire park and another 1.5 km circuit, as well as a footpath leading to Altos de Chavon. With the new nature trails, the total walking time from the furthest point of the park to Altos de Chavon will be no more than 30 minutes.

Despradel says they modeled elements of the park’s design on Central Park in Manhattan, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, Mirador del Sur Park in Santo Domingo and works by Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx. The National Botanical Gardens in Santo Domingo has also been consulted for a selection of the best plants suitable for the area.

Despradel adds that when completed, the park will serve as a sort of nature lab for future land developments in the resort.
