Migration Agency director Ricardo Taveras has challenged claims made by the Acoprovi construction association, which stated that if the migration and labor laws were applied, the construction industry would collapse. Asoprovi pointed out that Haitians make up the bulk of the construction workforce. Undocumented foreigners have up to 15 June 2015 to regularize their status, but many workers have been unable to get the required paperwork from Haiti due to lack of cooperation from the Haitian government. The Dominican Republic Labor Code establishes that only 20% of a company’s workforce can be foreign. Taveras responded: “We can no longer tolerate sectors that resist the formalization of their workforce.”
The government is also a major violator of labor laws in construction works nationwide. These work opportunities are a magnet that has attracted hundreds of thousands of undocumented workers from Haiti.
