Dominicans arrested in Puerto Rico

Authorities in Puerto Rico have seized an estimated US$32 million worth of cocaine off the island’s north coast, several miles from the coast of Loiza.

Police Chief Jose Caldero said yesterday, Tuesday 17 March 2015, that officers found 2,535 pounds (1,150 kilograms) aboard a boat and detained 14 Dominican Republic nationals. He said most of the suspects were detained on land as they awaited the boat with guns and gasoline, presumably to refuel the boat once it had offloaded its cargo of drugs. Another three people were found aboard the boat.

Caldero said officials believe the boat had departed from Venezuela and made stops in Trinidad and Tobago and St. Martin.

The announcement comes as the Caribbean sees an increase in the amount of cocaine being trafficked through the region.
