New York City Consul General Eduardo Selman and Cesar Herasme of the General de Seguros insurance company have announced a new funeral service plan for Dominicans resident in the states of New Jersey and New York who die in the US. The plan is targeted at low-income families. The insurance plan would cost US$30 in cash a year for the right to a coffin and one-day wake in the US and air transport of the body to the Dominican Republic or cremation in the US, plus US$1,000 in cash for expenses.
To qualify for the plan, the minimum age is 75, and the person’s health will be assessed. Terminally ill patients will not be affiliated, but people who suffer accidents will be covered, even if the accident happens 24 hours after their affiliation. Selman said that deputy consul Cecilia Baez, who is in charge of community affairs at the Consulate, would oversee the service.
Selman said that General de Seguros is a Dominican company and that the consulate will be representing it in the US.
Passaic, New Jersey mayor Alex Blanco praised the consulate for offering the service. He said that people show up at the city government offices every day seeking emergency assistance for funerals.
