Cement producers protest cargo pressures

The executive director of the Dominican Cement Producers Association, Julissa Baez, has joined manufacturers and Dominican business leaders who are calling for the government to take action to stop the forced monopoly of the unionized cargo transporter associations. She says they are major obstacles to cement sales in the country. Baez said that there were frequent conflicts between the freight unions that demand a greater share of the cargo and prevent companies from transporting their own goods. Baez says this is a clear example of constraints on free trade and a fragrant violation of the laws of the land. The unions are known to impose their services by using violent methods, with tacit government compliance over the years. The Fenatrado trucker monopoly has led to a major increase in the cost of doing business.
