PLD General Secretary Reynaldo Pared Perez is advising leading members, the former President and party president Leonel Fernandez and President Danilo Medina to meet separately before the Political Committee convenes tomorrow, Thursday, 26 March 2015 to discuss the issue of re-election.
Members of the government who are supporters of President Danilo Medina advocate installing the US limit of two consecutive terms in the Dominican Republic. At present, the 2010 Constitution instated a system of four years without consecutive re-election. This means President Danilo Medina can run again in the 2020 presidential election but cannot run in the 2016 election. Given recent poll results, if the Constitution is changed to allow him to run in the 2016 presidential election, Medina is likely to be elected, but then could not return to the presidency again. Former President Fernandez would be free to seek election in 2020 and then re-election in 2024.
The 3-8 March 2015 Greenberg-Diario Libre poll (1,007 eligible voters polled) found that Medina would win the 2016 presidential election with 64% of the vote against Luis Abinader as the PRM candidate. Guillermo Moreno of Alianza Pais would receive 7% of the vote, Miguel Vargas of the PRD 3% and Quique Antun of the PRSC 1%. If Hipolito Mejia were to run for the PRM, the vote would be Medina with 63%, Mejia with 18%, Moreno with 9%, and Vargas and Antun with 1%.
PLD Senator Pared Perez reminded all the members of the committee that they have to agree with the decisions made and whoever does not will be expelled from the committee as in 2002 when 10 members did not agree with a decision and were expelled.
He said that he had met with both Medina and Fernandez before announcing the date of the Political Committee meeting and that the agenda would be decided on the day of the meeting, and the majority vote would rule.
