In a statement yesterday, Tuesday 31 March 2015, Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez expressed his opposition to the idea of changing the Constitution to allow for President Danilo Medina’s reelection in 2016.
He said that there was not enough time left and that he had already stated at the end of February that he was not in agreement with changing the Constitution.
At the same time he called on politicians to take a break during Easter Week as it was a time for prayer and reflection and not a time for political activity. He also regretted the death of 15 people at the beginning of the week and asked the authorities to try to do more to prevent so many accidents.
He reminded the faithful of the importance of Easter Week in the Catholic Church and asked the public, especially young people to take part in the special celebrations and to respect and recognize Easter as a time of hope.
The main political parties, the PLD, PRD and PRSC, have announced separately that they would not be engaging in campaigning over the Easter holidays.
