Legalizing corruption

The director of the Attorney General Office’s Specialized Anti-Asset Laundering Division, German Miranda Villalona, has called on the Attorney General to not appeal the decision that favored Senator Felix Bautista and six other associates who were accused of asset laundering and corruption while in office. As reported in El Dia, he said the judges who rule that the case should not be heard are committed to the defendants.

“There is no hope in an appeal. The decision introduced a new figure in Dominican judiciary, that of legal or judicial impunity. That is, when the judge’s impartiality is lost when he is too familiar with the defendant. Miranda commented that all the white-collar criminals and actively corrupt government officials could be tried in an Inter-American Court.
