Senator Adriano Sanchez Roa (PLD-Elias Pina) is opposed to the Barrick Gold mining company’s plan to install a plant for storing raw materials and manufacturing explosives at their installations in Pueblo Viejo, Cotui. He said a report from local military experts opposes the installation on the grounds of national security, the company’s lack of experience in handling explosives, the mine’s geographical location and the tense relations between the mine and the local community, as well as safety considerations in the area, as reported in Diario Libre. Sanchez Roa said that the request violates Art. 252 of the Constitution that establishes that the Armed Forces shall inspect, supervise and control all arms, munitions and any other material, military equipment or supplies entering the country or produced domestically, subject to the restrictions established by law.
“It was demonstrated legally and technically the installation of an explosives plant is a risk the country should not accept, especially because of the wide distance between the mine and the explosives, which means the reaction time in any eventuality would be extensive, and there is little connection between the emergency and communication response centers,” he told Diario Libre.
