Dermatologist Emma Guzman says that around 10% of the patients she sees are diagnosed with basal cell cancer. Interviewed on Detalle Semanal on Channel 45, she said that 20% of the skin biopsies she orders are positive for this type of skin cancer.
While basal cell carcinoma rarely metastasizes or kills, it can cause disfigurement by invading surrounding tissues, and is cured with surgery, according to Dr. Guzman.
It can be prevented with by reducing the skin’s exposure to the sun. Dr. Guzman advises people who are in daily contact with the sun from 11am to 4pm use solar protection of 30 SPF or more, and to apply it several times a day to protect the skin.
