Medfly detected in Puerto Rico

After several items of fruit and vegetable exports were banned from the DR as a preventive measure, the US Department of Agriculture is reporting the detection of the pest in Cabo Rojo, in southwestern Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico’s Agriculture Secretary Myrna Comas Pagan was notified of the situation by the US Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), which recommended suspending transport of fruit and vegetables from the Cabo Rojo area to prevent Medfly from spreading to the rest of the island.

In March, the Dominican farming sector was seriously affected by a US ban on seven varieties of fruit and vegetables, including avocados and bell peppers, which make up a significant proportion of farm exports.
