40% increase in bread price ordered, not yet instated

Bakeries affiliated to the Small and Medium-sized Flour Manufacturers’ Union (UMPIH) should have increased the cost of bread 40% as of yesterday, Tuesday 7 April 2015. The union ordered the staple “pan de agua” bread roll, which weighs 2.26 oz, to be sold for RD$7 per unit. A smaller size (1.4 oz) will be made available for the former price of RD$5. The union ordered the new prices after they failed to obtain government subsidies. Bakers say that flour, which used to cost RD$980 per sack in 2010 now costs RD$1,700.
