Following criticism from many quarters about the salary increase for judges at the Constitutional Court (TC) and the Upper Electoral Court (TSE), the TSE has now explained that the reason for the increase was linked to inflation indexation.
Court President Mariano German said that the inflation indices are set by the Central Bank and all of their employees have their salaries increased in line with these indices. They said it was not a salary increase per se, but a cost of living increase in line with inflation.
The decision to link salaries to inflation was apparently made over three years ago in February 2012 although January this year was the first time it had actually taken place.
