Finjus attacks Supreme Court decision on Felix Bautista case

In a statement published in the media, the Institutionalism and Justice Foundation (Finjus) says that Resolution 544-2015 issued by the Supreme Court in favor of Senator Felix Bautista, accused by the Attorney General of administrative corruption and asset laundering, exposes the weaknesses of the Judicial Branch and increases the lack of public confidence in its actions. The civil society group also says that it is surprising that on that same day another similar resolution was issued in favor of the mayor of San Francisco de Macoris, Felix Manuel Rodriguez Grullon, who was also accused of corruption in office.

“What stands out is the fact that in both cases the justice system has operated to prevent the defendants from responding to accusations in a court hearing that would study the case, with all the framework of legality and due process. A new opportunity for government officials and political leaders to respond to actions they are being accused of has been stopped,” states the institution.

Finjus criticizes the Supreme Court for choosing a person who is said to have strong ties with the accused to head the process, and says that the most advisable course of action would have been for a career judge to lead the process.
