The Metropolitan Transport Authority (Amet) is working with the Police to evict windscreen washers and vendors from key city intersections. AMET also announced measures aimed at stopping people who have taken over public spaces to charge drivers for parking on city streets by threatening to damage their vehicles.
“We are going to take action against these people who work at the intersections and cause traffic chaos by offering their services or products,” said Amet in a press release. Amet says it is backed by Art. 103 of Law 241-67 on Transit and its amendments.
Diario Libre reports that illegal operators at the intersections between Maximo Gomez and John F. Kennedy, Maximo Gomez and 27 de Febrero, 27 de Febrero and Tiradentes and Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy avenues had already been removed.
Two years ago, Amet and the Police promised to tackle the harassment of commuters by vendors and windscreen washers after a commuter who felt threatened killed a windscreen washer.
