Feidin Santana was on his way to his North Charleston job as a barber on Saturday morning, 4 April 2015 when he witnessed the killing of Walter Scott. He was talking on his phone when he saw a policeman pursuing a man, and started filming. What he saw shocked him, especially as he was aware the police knew he had taped the scene and feared for his own life.
While he remained silent for several days, he came forward after reading the police report on the killing.
Santana witnessed 33-year old officer Michael Slager firing eight shots, of which five bullets hit 50-year old Walter Scott in the back, killing him. After hearing the Police version, he contacted the victim’s attorneys and the family.
The incident is making headlines in the US as the latest in a series of controversial police shootings of African-American men.
