Former President Hipolito Mejia has expressed his apologies to the gay community for statements he had made last week when campaigning as a PRM pre-candidate in New Jersey. During an event, he used a derogatory term for gay people and expressed his opposition to same-sex marriages and said that if he returned to the Presidency he would not sign a same-sex marriage law. He said that his opinions were misinterpreted and that he has always respected differences and diversity. “If I am asked to sign a law to authorize same-sex marriage, I will not. Go forth and multiply, and one cannot multiply that way. There is no way to impregnate a same sex partner,” he was quoted as saying.
Mejia confirmed that he does not agree with gay marriage because it is banned in the Dominican Constitution and goes against his Christian principles.
