As part of President Danilo Medina’s Seventh Summit of the Americas agenda in Panama yesterday, Thursday 9 April 2015, he met with the director general of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), William Lacy Swing and asked him to encourage the international development sector to support Haiti in the process of legalizing and documenting its citizens.
A Dominican government press release says that Swing told President Medina that he had lived in Haiti for five years and was aware of the situation there. He said he was familiar with the initiatives being taken by the Dominican government and described them as positive. He expressed interest in the progress being made and the Dominican government’s vision on the process.
Yesterday, Thursday 9 April 2015, Dominican Migration Agency director Jose Ricardo Taveras said that extra funds would be needed for the government to comply with the Migration Ruling requirement to deport people who have not regularized their status by the 17 June 2015 expiration date of the National Foreigner Legalization Plan.
